iPhone update 3.1.... Went wrong! ...

Hello

I tried to update me iPhone on iTunes the other day from 3.0 to 3.1.

My update didn't go in and my phone went into recovery mode although when I tried to recover it the recovery also failed... After 4 hours of trying to recover it my boyfriend had to force a 3.0 version back into the phone and I lost everything, now it didn't bother me so much as the phone was only a few weeks old!

After a good old cry and panic the phone worked again but I want to know what happens next time...? Do I update it and lose everything again or can someone tell me what went wrong and how to resolve the issue?
