Entourage 2004 and ical and iphone sync? ...

Hi,

I've had a macbook for a while but got an iphone 3gs last week and I'm just trying to set it up. My addresses and contacts seem to be syncing to my iphone OK but not my entourage calendar. I have gone into entourage preferences and ticked all the synch boxes and when I open ical I have an entourage calendar but none of my appointments are on there (the only thing that is are public holidays and birthdays?).

When I tried to sync entourage with ical he just hung so I thought this may be due to number of entourage calendar entries. So I went onto entourage and changed it so that anything over 12 months old is deleted but now I have checked and I still have all my calendar entries on entourage from 2005 so that hasn't worked. How can I delete the old calendar entries?

So as I understand it in order for my calendar to be synced on my iphone it has to go through ical (even though I don't use that on my Macbook). As I can't get entourage to sync my calendar with ical I can't get my calendar onto my iphone at present which is a real pain.

Would I be better looking at mobileme or something similar or do I just need to setup entourage and ical differently?

As you can see I really need some help! All advice very gratefully received.
