Contacts and Calendar - a bad mess, help ...

I've tried searching this forum and many other places, but I can't find an answer which helps.

A couple of days ago I plugged my iPhone into my PC for the first time in a couple of months. I was immediately prompted to update both iTunes and iPhone software, which I did. It took a long time to complete, but eventually went through the usual back-up and sync process.

Now I find that my Calendar entries are in a terrible mess. Not just duplication, which I have seen referred to elsewhere (I don't have MobileMe set up at all, by-the-way), but very strange entries. For example:

An event which I had previously set showed the children's school holidays. It had a start date and an end date, with no repeat. It worked fine.

After the software upgrade, I suddenly have:

1 event on the start day, now showing a repeat
2 events on the second day
3 events on the third day
...etc etc until the calendar is completely overwhelmed with events, which also go on beyond the original end date because each day's new copy of the event sets the end date one day further on!

It's just a complete mess, and that's just one of the examples. I have duplicate events as well, and repeat messages which have suddenly introduced start and end times (not just dates) which I had never set before.

I have similar problems with my Contacts.

Is there any way I can roll back the Calendar and Contacts to the state they were in just before I did the software updgrade? I'm pretty sure it took a back up before installing the software, but can I specify that I want that version restored??

Thanks for any help, and sorry if this has been dealt with already... I'm just getting nowhere when searching for it.
